Jiu Jitsu is a systems-based martial art that focuses on the grappling aspect of unarmed
hand-to-hand fighting. At a conceptual level it could be summarized as a battle to
control and immobilize an opponent to a point that enables the application of various forms of
strangulation and joint locks. This battle for positional dominance and control is won by
attacking and compromising the opponent's structure and alignment while simultaneously maintaining your own.
Doing this effectively allows you to absorb and apply a large amount of force while the opponent's ability to do so is severely limited. In general, the periphery (arms/legs) is attacked first to gain control of the center mass (head/spine), once control of the center mass is achieved, finishing attacks to an isolated segment of the periphery (and neck) are then able to be effectively utilized.
